Nederlandsch-Indië / Hindia-Belanda / Dutch East Indies
Dai Nippon Teikoku Seihu
大日本帝國政府
(Great Japanese Empire Government)
These are the second issues since the occupation of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in 1942. These notes were issued in 1943. Unlike those first issues, the value of these notes are printed in Roepiah (Rupiah). The designs of this series are also completely different, all showing local arts or scenes.
The Imperial Japanese army occupied Indonesia (then known as Dutch East Indies) on 08.03.1942. Despite their promises, the Japanese Imperial army was never intended to grant independence to the Indonesians and anyone who dared to oppose their rule were usually excused. However, knowingly that they were not winning the war, the Japanese occupier agreed to the discussion of independence with the then Indonesian leaders Sukarno and Dr Mohammad Hatta in early 1945. The initial agreement was that Indonesia will proclaim independence on 24.08.1945. Japan surrendered unconditionally on 15.08.1945 following the dropping of the two atomic bombs by the Americans on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 06.08.1945 and 09.08.1945 respectively. The two bombs were named "Little Boy" and "Fat Man". With the sudden announcement of the end of the war, the Indonesians inadvertently brought forward the proclamation of independence before the return of the Dutch occupier. The independence proclamation was announced on the morning of 17.08.1945.
This year, Indonesia celebrated the country's 75 years of independence from foreign occupiers and issued a commemorative banknote of 75000 rupiah.
A full set of these issues comprises of:
0.5, 1, 5, 10, 100 (x2) and 1000 roepiah. Here I have only posted 3 notes.
